A note on structural holes theory and niche overlap

چکیده
Diffuse competition due to niche overlap between actors without (direct) ties with each other, constrains their structural autonomy. This is not dealt with in Burt’s mathematical model of his well-known structural holes theory. We fix his model by introducing a network measure of niche overlap. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Optimization of infinite composite plates with quasi-triangular holes under in-plane loading
This study used particle swarm optimization (PSO) to determine the optimal values of effective design variables acting on the stress distribution around a quasi-triangular hole in an infinite orthotropic plate. These parameters were load angle, hole orientation, bluntness, fiber angle, and material properties, which were ascertained on the basis of an analytical method used by Lekhnitskii [3]. ...
متن کاملNiche overlap and diffuse competition.
Current theory predicts a distinct upper limit on the permissible degree of niche overlap; moreover, theory suggests that maximal tolerable overlap should be relatively insensitive to environmental variability. Data presented here demonstrate that, within the lizard subset of natural desert communities, niche overlap decreases both with increasing environmental variability and with increasing n...
متن کاملEcological Niche Modeling of Mountain Vipers from the Raddei Clade in Iran, Caucasus and Eastern Turkey
Mountain vipers of the genus Montivipera, generally, and the species of the Raddei clade, specifically, are interesting examples of species neo-endemism in Iran, Anatolia, and the Caucasus. Given the critical conservation status of these species, it is necessary to identify their suitable habitats for prioritizing conservation measures. We modeled ecological niche of each species based on four ...
متن کاملLinking modern coexistence theory and contemporary niche theory
Modern coexistence theory and contemporary niche theory represent parallel frameworks for understanding the niche’s role in species coexistence. Despite increasing prominence and shared goals, their compatibility and complementarity have received little attention. This paucity of overlap not only presents an obstacle to newcomers to the field, but it also precludes further conceptual advances a...
متن کاملDistance and cosine measures of niche overlap
Niche overlap is increasingly used as a way of measuring the intensity of interorganizational competition. This paper examines and compares various distance and cosine measures of niche overlap. The analysis in this paper shows that Euclidean distance applied to the raw data as well as to transformed data is not an appropriate measure of niche overlap. An alternative measure from the cosine fam...
